Although garage door opener is one of the best inventions in human’s life, but when garage door opener is starting to act, it can make you frustrated too. It is wise to perform a troubleshooting garage door first rather than changing the entire garage door opener unit. You may start to perform the troubleshooting project from the garage door motor. There are a few simple steps below you can follow:

First thing first, you need to determine where is the core of the problem. Garage door opener is using a chain or belt system and an electric motor. When a garage door opener lifts up the door, you will see that it pulled via a belt or chain through the electric motor. You can determine whether the core of the problem lies on the motor or hinges, tracks or chain with a help of overhead manual garage door handles.

The next step in troubleshooting the garage door motor is checking for the stability. Make sure that the alignment of the door and chain is centered in the garage ceiling. As the opener used every day, misalignment has happened and it causes a problem when a garage door is closing or opening. Make sure that the tracks and rollers, all bolts and screws, all brackets that supported the motor is secured and find if there is a part that loose.

Proceed to troubleshoot the garage door motor by checking the gear. Suspects are there any whining or grinding, both of indicators are a sign of obstruction in the gears of the motor. It is also a sign of a damage happened to the gears and motor. After inspecting all the aspects that cause a motor malfunction, you can try to reset the motor as an attempt making the motor works again. Press a reset button on the motor, hold it for a couple of seconds according to the manual instruction. Check whether the warning system light is giving any respond, if the light gives a good respond try to activate the motor.
